Scorsese!


At long last!

Martin Scorsese wins Best Director for The Departed at the 79th Academy Awards.

"So many people over the years have been wishing this for me," Scorsese said. "And I'm saying thank you."

And also, one of my all-time favorite actors, Alan Arkin, won for Best Supporting Actor in Little Miss Sunshine.


"More than anything", Arkin said, "I'm deeply moved by the open-hearted appreciation our small film has received, which in these fragmented times speaks so openly of the possibility of innocence."

The Shop on Main Street...

....is my second Czech film, and like Closely Watched Trains, won the Oscar© for Best Foreign Film (1966).

A heartrendering tragicomedy about anti-Semitism and deportation in a small town in rural 1942 Slovakia, with Ida Kaminská as an elderly Jewess button shop owner befriended and protected by a carpenter, Josef Kroner.

Co-directed by Elmar Klos and Ján Kadár.
