The two armed guards must have stepped out of the frame for a second; I don't think they're allowed to be photographed.

Those guys are serious as the knife-like creases in their trousers.
I don't know if it's the profession or the unifoorms, or both, but mail collecting looked a serious and important duty.

When I saw this I immediately thought "Library of Congress." So I went there and found this and some other interesting photos. Be sure to search both "mailbox" and "mail box" — results are different. My favorite is the one showing the manufacture of mailboxes. I may put it on my blog.
